Teacher Professional Learning

Transitioning to Remote Teaching: An interactive online course for elementary, middle, and high school teachers is now open for enrollment.

Two versions of this course are available:

  • Grades K-6 Remote Teaching

  • Grades 7-12 Remote Teaching

Both versions of the course engage with the same topics, but the applications, strategies, and tools discussed vary by course to be age appropriate.

The courses are expected to take between 10 to 15 hours to complete. Participants will receive a Professional Development certificate and badge, and for an additional processing fee, 2.0 CEUs are available from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) upon successful completion.

The two videos below provide an overview. The video on the left provides a short summary; the video on the right provides an in-depth review.

Course Objectives:

  • Demonstrate awareness and empathy for the online learner experience, both challenges and benefits.

  • Value frequent communication with stakeholders regarding learner progress and strategies for supporting learner engagement.

  • Apply techniques for building community in an online and blended learning environment.

  • Utilize learner-centered instructional strategies, tools, and engaging experiences needed to encourage active learning and interaction.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of design considerations for a variety of learners and their families in a variety of situations.

  • Creates appropriate quantitative and qualitative assessment tools, which allow learners the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the content.

Course design

Modules are built around a framework of Discover-Discuss-Demonstrate, to ensure that participants have the opportunity to engage with course concepts and link those concepts to practice in their classrooms. Participants will participate in both synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous (on your own time) learning experiences. Facilitators will model a variety of strategies and tools to provide examples of how participants can implement remote learning with their students. While this course will not certify educators to be online or blended teachers, they will leave with strategies, tools, resources, and a plan they can use to transition between online and face-to-face environments during this school year and beyond.

Cohorts

These are interactive, facilitated courses modeling how educators can implement a variety of research-based strategies to engage their own students in online and blended learning environments. Cohorts are facilitated by experienced online educators. Participants may register individually, but we expect that most educators will join the course as part of a cohort from within their school or district to encourage collaboration.

We will run a school/district cohort with a minimum of 10 and maximum of 30 educators. For schools/districts registering more than 10 teachers, we will discuss with the school how many cohorts they would like us to offer.
